FAQ

  • What are razor bumps?
    +

It is estimated that 15 percent of Caucasian men and at least 80 percent of African-American and Hispanic men suffer from razor bumps, which are the red, painful bumps that may become visible after shaving. Men with darker skin tones have thicker, curlier hair and usually have a very rough time with ingrown hairs. They occur when the hair grows naturally curly into the face rather than away from the face. Your skin heals itself, trapping the hair under the skin. Once the skin has been penetrated, the body and skin will quickly react to what it considers to be a "foreign body." This reaction of inflammation is what causes the actual razor bump. When you shave, you may have to shave over these bumps, which can be very painful and cause irritation and can make the condition even worse.

  • What are these red, painful bumps I see after I shave?
    +

They are razor bumps caused by ingrown hairs. Most hairs only penetrate your skin once...on the way out, but an ingrown hair grows towards the skin and pierces it while it continues growing. Your skin considers this an attack by a foreign body and naturally begins to heal itself, trapping the hair under its surface and creating a visible bump.

  • Can I get rid of these bumps?
    +

The active agents in Bump Down's formula can help greatly reduce the development of razor bumps without drying your skin or creating other skin irritations. Use Bump Down every day after shaving or waxing and you'll see fewer bumps.

  • Do Barc products work for women?
    +

Yes. All of our products are suitable for use by women as well as men. You may look great just after you've gotten rid of unwanted hair, but your skin is an innocent bystander that pays (and displays) the cost if it's not treated properly throughout the process. Barc products combine a perfect balance of the most effective ingredients that rush to the scene to protect and relieve your skin.

  • I have dark skin. Do I really need to use products with SPF?
    +

Yes. Just because you have dark skin does not mean that you're immune from the adverse effects of sun damage, which can range from dark marks to uneven skin tone. Since your skin may not as readily display the amount or the intensity of the sun's rays it's been exposed to, it is even more crucial to remember to keep your skin protected with a sun block lotion.

  • What are whitening agents?
    +

Whitening agents are chemicals that lighten the skin. Most dermatologists are very cautious when using products containing these ingredients as there are many negative side effects associated with their unsupervised use. Some of these products can cause discoloration and actually damage your skin tone. Most commonly used whitening agents are hydroquinone, cortisone and mercury.

  • Other products I see on the market contain alcohol. Why doesn't Barc?
    +

Alcohol is a chemical compound that by nature is a drying agent and your skin doesn't like being dehydrated. It will show its discontent by feeling tight and itchy (and in some cases might even be visibly ashy).

  • Barc products are fragrance-free. Why is that?
    +

Most fragrances are complex chemical concoctions that may be pleasant to smell, but can be very harsh to your skin (especially when it's going through or repairing itself from razors and clippers). Products with added fragrances can irritate your skin and can cause redness and itching. Additionally, a good percentage of the population is allergic to fragrances - and we don't want anyone to miss out on the benefits that Barc can deliver!

  • Why is soap bad for my skin?
    +

Soap is a drying agent. All skin is covered by a protective layer of oil. Continued use of soap breaks down this protective layer and causes the skin to become dry, cracked, ashy and flaky.

  • What about skin-care products containing oil?
    +

Products containing excessive oil block the pores and cause pimples and acne. They can also leave an oily sheen on the face particularly on those with darker complexions.

  • What makes Barc's Bump Down different from the other razor bump treatments on the market?
    +

We know that many skin tones - especially darker tones- have specific challenges that have not been fully addressed by skin care companies until now. Barc's products contain ingredients specially formulated to complement the genetic makeup of various skin tones. Bump Down, along with all Barc products, is Alcohol Free, Oil Free and Fragrance Free. Also, Bump Down contains no chemical scent and does not burn or irritate your skin. No more liquids with whitening agents or an SPF that leaves a chalky residue on your face. Our treatment actually moisturizes any ashy areas while causing absolutely zero discoloration.

  • What is it that makes Bump Down work?
    +

Bump down is formulated with 8% glycolic acid to help reduce unsightly ingrown hairs and reduce irritation from shaving. The glycolic acid gently exfoliates and smoothes the skin without any of the drying effects of alcohol. The percentage of glycolic acid we use is safe and effective for twice daily use. Bump Down is also blended with chamomile extract and glycerin to soothe and hydrate your skin.
